DOg-eared café

Dog-Eared Café has been conceived of in the tradition of European cafe models of old to provide an atmosphere in which art, literature, and conversation are paramount, taking precedence over long lines, impatient baristas, and uncomfortable seating designed to discourage long stays.

We’re a comfortable couch and a good book; a warm, carefully crafted coffee drink sipped slow to wash down a rich treat savoured. We’re good music and honest conversations, evenings spent with your community, a craft beer or local wine shared with laughter in your ears, the world’s demands left at the door.

Welcome to the Dog-Eared Café.

Welcome to our home.

YOUr hosts

Darren and Jeanette met in their wild later days in Toronto during a time when internet dating was in its infancy; their romance unconventional in execution, their wooing continuous, giddy and envied.

With Arts degrees under their belts, (Jeanette with a BFA from Windsor in Drawing & Painting, and an MA from York in Art History/Curatorial Studies; Darren having turned his studies to Creative Writing at UofT after a brief stint at OCAD) it was the inevitable cliché that their arts degrees led them to work in the service industry. Jeanette—who has always loved orchestrating lavishly detailed parties—found success as an event planner, organizing street markets, grandiose city wide affairs, and hosting intimately formal parties. Darren found joy in being the life of the party as a night-club bartender, mixologist, and later a bar/restaurant manager whose expertise led him to work as a consultant, helping others realize their dreams of successful bar ownership.

One epic wedding and rambunctious child later, D&J made the bittersweet decision to leave the city to return to their small town roots; to marry their love of art, baking, books, and coffee, with their passion for showing people a great time. Their combined skills make them the ideal hosts for such an open, comfortable, inclusive and hospitable space.

It’s super lovely to meet you.
